Booster Pumps

Booster pumps are name for the function they provide - boosting pressure and flow of city /municipal entering the plumbing system for your car wash facility. Often, pressure and flow of this water source is not adequate to reach the equipment at your facility and needs a boost to ensure a high volume of water is delivered reliably and consistently to meet your needs.

One thing that stands out if you look at a booster pump is the long tube-like component extending from the motor. That component holds a stack of impellers that work together to build pressure in multiple stages, using each level as a support for the next to maintain consistent pressure. This well-engineered multi-stage design also means that only a relatively small, efficient motor is required to move large volumes of water.

  • HP - Considered some of the most durable booster pumps on the market, the HP Series consists of multi-stage centrifugal pumps with a cast iron motor adapter, base, and discharge. They also have acetal impellers, Buna-N O-rings, 304 stainless steel shafts, polycarbonate diffusers, and carbon/ceramic Buna-N mechanical seals. HP Series pumps feature the patented SignaSeal staging system that utilizes a ceramic wear surface that, when incorporated with Sta-Rite's "true" independent floating impellers, dominates with 1st-in-class performance, superior sand handling, and thrust management.
  • HPS - These pumps feature the same design as the HP, only with a stainless steel motor adapter, base, and discharge. They're only available in 230 voltage.

Reclaim Pumps

These ruggedly constructed centrifugal pumps are designed to handle the intense demands of reclaim use, pulling dirty water from holding tanks and transfer it to the reclaim system. These high-head pumps feature heavy duty motors, leak-proof mechanical seals, easy service design, and a drain port for easy winterizing. Additionally, they are some of fastest priming pumps on the market.

  • D Series High Head - Robust cast iron body pumps with cast iron diffusers. The 1 and 2-horsepower models have Noryl impellers and 416 stainless steel shafts. The 3 and 5-horsepower models have bronze impellers and carbon steel shafts with a stainless steel sleeve.
  • HMS - Made with close-grained cast iron, the bodies on these pumps are specially treated to resist corrosion. They include a fast-acting and quiet automatic pressure regulator that eliminates "hunting" for the correct drive pressure. New improved stem and guide are precisely molded to assure efficient, trouble-free performance on all deep wells. Also features polycarbonate impellers that are precision molded for perfect balance and ultra-smooth movement for high performance and efficiency.

Jet Pumps

What sets these centrifugal pumps apart from others is the inclusion of a venturi nozzle component that creates excellent suction to pull liquids- commonly referred to as a jet. This design makes them ideal for pulling water from wells and large storage tanks and delivering that water to car wash equipment. These are robust pumps built to offer many years of reliable service life.

Important Sta-Rite Jet Pump Series

  • CJ - Stainless steel body pumps with high-strength, corrosion-resistant thermoplastic venturi jet nozzles. They feature a mechanical shaft seal made of carbon-ceramic and stainless steel, and motor windings boast superior insulation materials that protect against excessive moisture and contaminants. CJ Series pumps are self-priming after the priming chamber has been filled with water.
  • PL - These pumps have a Dura-Glas fiberglass-reinforced thermoplastic bodies - lightweight, rustproof and exceptionally strong. They're extremely resistant to sand and abrasive wear and can be used for deep well installations. Heavy duty motor with dustproof canopy and permanently lubricated, heavy-duty ball bearings for smooth, quiet operation and extended life. Also feature a multi-port, reinforced polypropylene diffuser and a precision molded Noryl impeller for perfect balance and efficiency.
  • PN - The fiberglass-reinforced thermoplastic polypropylene body on these pumps provides total corrosion resistance and high resistance to abrasion. Precision-molded polycarbonate impellers offer perfect balance and ultra-smooth operation for top notch performance and efficiency. Polypropylene diffusers allow pumps to prime faster and handle more air. Heavy-duty, permanently lubricated ball bearings are shielded and extensively tested to ensure extended life and smooth quiet operation.
  • HN - Close-grained cast iron body pumps that provide excellent performance in wells up to 25' deep. Polypropylene diffusers allow pumps to prime faster and handle more air. Motor windings have superior insulation materials that protect against excessive moisture and contaminants. Heavy-duty, permanently lubricated ball bearings are shielded and are extensively tested to ensure extended life and smooth quiet operation.

Submersible Pumps

These pumps are also used for transferring water from wells and large storage tanks to car wash equipment. They are used by inserting them inside the reservoir and completely submerging them in water. This dampens operational noise, cools the motor, and allows impellers to "push" the fluid instead of requiring suction. This design allows them to last a long time with limited maintenance.

  • S.T.E.P. Plus D Series - Pumps in this series are effluent pumps, a type of submersible pump that can handle clear or graywater, meaning they can handle small, suspended solids without becoming clogged. They boast superior "draw-down" capability, with reduced amp draw and with cooler and quieter operation. S.T.E.P. Plus D Series pumps are housed in 300 stainless steel shells with a shaft and coupling made of the same material. In addition, they have fiberglass-reinforced discharge ports, Nylatron discharge bearings, polycarbonate diffusers, and acetal impellers.

Choosing Between Jet and Submersible Pumps

Since jet pumps and submersible pumps are often used for similar applications, you may be wondering why you might choose one over the other. The most important difference to understand is that jet pumps are mounted outside/above the well or tank you're pulling water from, while submersible pumps are placed inside the vessel and completely submerged. The pump location matters for these reasons:

  • Accessibility - Jet pumps are easily accessible for repair and maintenance, while submersible pumps are not. This is important to keep in mind, as you may have to completely remove a submersible pump from a tank or well to replace parts or clear clogs. However, submersible pumps have the benefit of being constantly cooled by the water they're submerged in, eliminating a lot of the stress put on pumps. That means they're also not subject to dirt, dust, and other environmental factors that are a concern for exposed jet pumps. As such, they don't require as much regular maintenance as a jet pump - and often last longer.
  • Pushing vs Pulling Operation - Since submersible pumps are under water, they use a pushing action to move water. Conversely, jet pumps are above the water source and use a pulling/sucking action for transfer. Pushing is easier for a pump to do, making submersible pumps the more efficient option.
  • Operational Noise - Submersible pumps essentially run silently or very quietly because they're under water, while jet pumps may produce minor noise when running.
  • Priming - Submersible pumps never lose their prime or run dry from air being in the line (assuming the reservoir has water). Jet pumps, on the other hand, need to be primed and can be damaged if they run dry.
  • Depth - Submersible pumps work competently in deep wells - even down to several hundred feet. Conversely, standard Sta-Rite jet pumps will struggle beyond 25 feet (Sta-Rite does offer well kits to modify their jet pumps to be used beyond their normal depth capabilities). If you have a deep reservoir, a submersible pump is probably ideal, but a jet pump may be perfectly suitable if you're dealing with a shallow application or acquire a well kit for modification.

Both jet and submersible pumps are excellent options and have their place - weigh the points above and consider what will work best for your application and preferences!
